This case displays material related to the founding of both the City of Toledo and the University of Toledo. Included are the original seal of the university and the 1837 City of Toledo Act of Incorporation.

Right side of the this exhibit case: The work of l’Alliance Française included classes wherein French was taught at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, as well as several public events that celebrated French moments in history, such as the Bicentennial of the French Revolution. The French arts were also promoted, including film viewing parties, lectures about notable French artists, authors, and philosophers, and plays produced in conjunction with the University of Toledo, most memorably Turcaret, a comedy performed by Le Treteau de Paris, a famous troupe from Paris at the Doerman Theater in 1967

Guest book, memorial service for President John F. Kennedy held in the American Embassy, Moscow, December 1963. Kohler's embassy hosted the official memorial service for President Kennedy that was held in the Soviet Union. This book includes the signatures of all the guests who attended that service, including all of the top Soviet leaders. Of particular note is the signature of Premier Nikita Khrushchev and his wife.

Max Schnitker diary, 1945-1946. Schnitker kept this diary to record his thoughts about his wartime service in India. Included are many photographs that captured his perception of Indian culture at the time, including a snake charmer, people bathing in the street, and Schnitker and his comrades riding camels.
The June 1948 issue of the newsletter for veterans of the WWII China-Burma-India campaign. These newsletters document the efforts of some of the men who survived one of WWII's most difficult campaigns to stay connected many years after the war ended.
The March 1972 issue of the Roundup newsletter
China-Burma-India Veterans Assoc. 58th Reunion program. Program from the 58th Reunion of the China-Burma-India Veterans Association, held Aug.30-Sept.5, 2005 in Crystal City, Virginia. This was the last year of the Association.

Though it was hard for him to be away from his family and he was constantly hoping for the war to end, he takes time to describe the native population and the beauty of the Philippines.

"Somewhere in India" letter from Ken Colthorpe to family in Toledo, November 22, 1944. In his first letter home, Colthorpe describes his experiences stationed in India during WWII. He writes of the difficulty he has adjusting to life in a different climate, mentioning his concerns of catching malaria and the "basha" hosuing made out of bamboo. He details the furniture in his "grass shack" that is made of re-purposed military supplies, including tables and chairs made of tail assemblies of bombs with "parachutes for cushions."
"Somewhere in India" letter from Ken Colthorpe, June 18, 1945. Seven months after his first letter in this series, Colthorpe discusses how he still has difficulty sleeping in the climate of India with its heat, humidity, and monsoons, not to mention the "whole army of frogs living in our basha." Despite his difficulty in adjusting to the environment, Colthorpe writes that he is enjoying his flight missions over "The Hump" of the Himalayan Mountains.
While in Europe, Carl Joseph would regularly send books to President Nash that Joseph hoped University of Toledo students would enjoy, including this one that contains illustrations of universities in Italy. The books were added to the collections of the UT Library, and now are in the rare book collection of the Ward M. Canaday Center for Special Collections.
Correspondence, Carl Joseph to Philip C. Nash, 1944. Carl Joseph correspondence (letters and V-mail) with UT President Philip Nash, 1943-44. in these few letters between the two men, they each expressed their sorrow about the reality of war, and their hopes for peace.

Qinhuangdao is Toledo's sister city in China since 1985. Located at the eastern end of the Great Wall, Qinhuangdao is China's glass city. The China Committee of Toledo Sister Cities International was established in 2010 to further support this relationship.

Overview: These artifacts and documents, on loan from the regional committees of Toledo Sister Cities International, are from the various cities and regions that are represented in the Sister Cities organization. They include materials from the Beqaa Valley, Lebanon; Poznan, Poland; Londrina, Brazil; Qinhuangdao, China; Szeged, Hungary; Csongrád County, Hungary; Toyohashi, Japan; Tanga, Tanzania; Delmenhorst, Germany; Coimbatore, India; and Hyderabad, Pakistan. Also included are administrative documents related to the Toledo Sister Cities International organization. The postcards, framed document, plaque and paperweight are from Qinhuangdao, People's Republic of China.
Tanga, Tanzania became a sister city in 2001, a relationship which began with a donation of a fire truck to Tanga, the shipping of which was funded by the Toledo-Tanga Committee.

The work of the Alliance Française took the form of classes wherein French was taught at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, as well as several public events that celebrated French moments in history, such as Bastille Day and the Bicentennial of the French Revolution in addition to the French arts, including film viewing parties, lectures about notable French artists, authors, and philosophers, and plays produced in conjunction with the University of Toledo, most memorably Turcaret, a comedy performed by Le Treteau de Paris, a famous troupe from Paris, in 1967.

International agreement between Libbey-Owens-Ford and manufacturers in Belgium.
License agreement for the Bicheroux flat glass production process, Edward Ford Plate Glass Company, 1927. Edward Ford Plate Glass in Rossford purchased the rights to use the Bicheroux process from the company in the Netherlands that had invented it. The Bicheroux machine used water-cooled iron rollers to control the thickness of flat glass, reducing the grinding and polishing previously required.
